Tune-Up Your Fall Health Program

Welcome to my fall newsletter. I hope you're having a great Fall. I'm in my second year in Southern Oregon and am grateful for the natural beauty of this part of the country. While living in Chicago I was used to radical changes in climate and corresponding stresses to the body. Here in Oregon the changes are definitely not as extreme but nonetheless substantial. The temperature and amount of sun exposure are the two major climatic factors we have to compensate for in our dietary and health programs.

In this issue I will cover:

  • Fall Weather Dietary Changes for Warmth and Health
  • New website articles and services
  • Upcoming Create Vibrant Health Lectures and Seminars
  • Special Offer: Cold Weather Tune-up Consultation

Dietary Changes for Warm to Cold Weather

It's early November and in most parts of the country a chill is in the air. Ever since the age of inexpensive fossil fuels and refrigeration there has been a debate about whether people should eat a different diet in the colder months compared to the warmer months. Prior to recent history people ate only what was around in season or what could be stored for the winter.

Tips to Improve Your Circulation

Most of us naturally gravitate toward warmer foods in the winter such as more cooked grains, warm soups and hot beverages as the weather gets colder. This makes sense; however, I feel it is important to not go too far and lose the benefits of enzyme active live foods just because the weather is colder.

There are three major areas of concern for us as the weather gets colder and the days shorter.

  1. Since most of us are outdoors less and have less sun exposure in the colder months we need to get more of our Vitamin D from dietary sources.
  2. There is a greater need for energy production (ATP) to keep warm since our bodies will have to generate more of its own heat.
  3. Since our bodies are more covered in the cold weather and are our skin is breathing and sweating less, our bodies can become more toxic in the colder weather, so as a general rule there is a greater need to support detoxification in the colder months. Toxins also can impede or block the cellular production of energy and poison the immune system therefore making it more difficult to stay warm and fight off infections in the winter months.
James Jordan

Many people are under the mistaken assumption that raw foods necessarily make you colder or cool down the body. Actually your body regulates its own temperature through a complex process starting with energy production (ATP) in the mitochondria of the cells and culminating with increased metabolism generated by the secretion of norepinephrine, epinephrine, and thyroxin - hormones produced by the adrenal and thyroid glands. All these metabolic functions are regulated by the hypothalamus. In essence, whatever naturally helps your body produce energy and hormones will aid you in keeping warm and strong in the cold weather.

We can increase the warmth of our bodies by paying attention to these three areas:

  1. Nutrient-dense, easily digested, enzyme active foods which provides the vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids and amino acids which , along with oxygen and water, are the most important elements in ATP production.
  2. High quality fats including adequate saturated fats are the most important nutritional element in hormone production.
  3. Increasing blood flow throughout your body to keep you warm.

Top Ten Cold Weather
Diet Changes

1. Increase the amount of raw, saturated fats in your diet including: eggs, raw milk butter, raw milk cream and coconut oil/butter.

2. Increase the amount of raw monounsaturated fat rich foods such as avocados, olive oil, walnuts, pumpkin seeds and almonds.

3. Increase the amount of polyunsaturated fat rich foods such as salmon, herring, sardines, trout, ground flaxseeds, flaxseed oil and hemp-seed oil.

4. Increase enzyme rich foods that are found easily year round such as: bee pollen, sauerkraut, live culture yogurt and kombucha tea.

5. If you eat more cooked foods make sure to both chew the food thoroughly and take digestive enzymes to help digest the foods completely in order to get the nutrients required for energy production. For more information on enzymes and their importance in digestion and to take an enzyme deficiency questionnaire please read my Newsletter Issue #6.

6. If you are spending more time indoors in the winter you will be getting less sunlight and you'll need to make sure you get a dietary source or supplement source of vitamin D. Excellent sources include: Cod-liver oil, Salmon, Mackerel, Tuna, Sardines and raw dairy butter. The easiest way to get the minimum 400 I.U. per day you will need is to take 1 tsp. of Cod-Liver Oil per day.

7. Increase consumption of herbs and foods than improve circulation including: cayenne pepper, ginger root, peppermint tea, garlic, Omega 3 rich foods such as cold water fish and flaxseed oil.

8. Start a metabolic enzyme program designed to clear your arteries and capillaries of plaque, damaged fats and clots. The best formula I know of for this purpose is VitalzymSEB which has a combination of serrapeptase, nattokinase,CoQ10, Amla (food source high in vitamin C) and magnesium. These are all necessary nutrients for improved circulation. You can order VitalzymSEB from my office by calling 541.482.2250 or on my website's products page.
Click here to go to the website Products Page and read more about VitalzymSEB

9. Eat flash frozen fruits and vegetables. When your supply of fresh produce is limited in the colder months you can still obtain nutrient rich organic foods from flash frozen fruits and vegetables. The nutrients are locked in the freezing processes and although some enzyme depletion takes place in frozen foods overall the nutritional value of the food is better than fresh produce that sits around in coolers for weeks at a time.

10. Incorporating a detoxification program into your cold weather program to keep your energy up and your immune system strong. (see below for a special offer to you for a complete cold-weather dietary tune up which includes a winter detoxification program).

Special Cold Weather
Tune-Up Offer

I am offering current and new clients a cold weather tune-up consultation session which can be done in person or by phone for a discounted rate (through December 1) of $75 for an hour session.

In this consultation you will receive:

  • A customized circulation enhancement program including: dietary, supplement and exercise components.
  • A customized detoxification plan through the next six months that goes at a pace you can handle.
  • Refinements on your diet plan for the cold weather season which take into account your body type and metabolic type (if we have assessed that already).

You can't go wrong with these tips. As far as the increase in fats go, try to eat most of them in their raw form. Fats that have been heated or processed are much harder to utilize by the body. If you eat cooked fats make sure to take digestive enzymes that have lipase in them to help break down the fats. If you have gallbladder problems or it has been removed you should take a more powerful enzyme formula that has ox bile as a component to help break down the fats.

Eating warmer foods is a great idea during the cold weather season, but don't miss out on the enzymes from raw foods. Warm up fresh juices with ginger, drink your raw milk at room temperature by leaving a glass out overnight and letting it culture, and take your digestive enzymes with your meals.

The best one I have found is called 4 Digestion from Genesis Today. It has four products in one: plant-based enzymes, HCL (derived from Beets), Pancreatic enzymes and herbs to support digestion such as: gentian, ginger root, fennel and artichoke. I carry this in my office and can ship it to you if you're interested.

I hope this information has been valuable for you and I look forward to your feedback and questions. I am adding a question and answer section to my newsletters so feel free to email me your questions on important health topics. I can't promise I'll put your question in the next newsletter, but I will try to get to the questions that are most common.

Yours in Health,
Jim
